No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
